Today’s Reason To Drink

sinkingship-copyHave you ever had a long-forgotten memory just pop into your head, scaring the shit out of you like one of those jack-in-the-box clowns? I was rehashing various relationships to someone recently, and up surfaced this gem. I guess I had buried it far away from my conscious, because I hadn’t thought of it in quite some time.

It was a relationship I was in that was going sour — and I knew it, and she knew it, but I was determined to fight to keep it alive. In retrospect, I realize this was a frivolous cause, but at the time, I guess I just didn’t want it to end. So I suggested therapy — a noble experiment that either puts you back on the tracks or derails everything.

So after proposing the potential fix, she said, “Why rearrange chairs on a sinking ship?”

In hindsight, that’s a pretty funny metaphor. But at the time, my heart sunk like the Titanic … and Rose and Jack’s future. (I still think they could have shared that piece of wood, but I digress.)
